Note that Edinburgh gets very busy during the summer, especially during the International Festival (mid-August - early September), so you should book accomodation well in advance if possible.

Historic Scotland are responsible for 300 or so historic monuments and buildings in Scotland, the majority being medieval or renaissance, and are well worth contacting if you plan to visit the castles and abbeys of Scotland. They offer Explorer tickets which allow free entry into most of their sites.
