ImageCouching Techniques
The most basic couching technique is used to lay a single or double thread in straight lines. Leave about an inch (2.5 cm) free at the start of the stitching line. This will be tidied away later. If you are using a fine thread you can use it doubled and start at the fold of the thread, securing it with a single stitch.

The couching stitches should be small and regular, approximately ¼ inch (0.6 cm) apart. When you reach the end of the metal thread, cut it off about an inch (2.5 cm) from the final stitch then thread it through a chenille needle. Use this needle to pull the thread through the two layers of fabric and catch it down on the underside with several small stitches. Repeat this with the other end of the thread. You now have a completed line of goldwork.
