Requirements
These instructions are detailed, but they do require you to take your own measurements and adjust the pattern to look right on you. To do this, you need to be familiar with the pictures of the originals. All those I refer to are contained in "A Visual History of Costume: The Sixteenth Century" by Jane Ashelford, published 1983 / 1993 (paperback), ISBN 0713468289. Some of them can be found on the web: here is a guide.
I have not given a bibliography, because I have not found any costume books which I think are particularly useful for the English hood.
Apart from the pictures, you will need (all measurements are approximate):
A large piece of cardboard, 26" x 8", for making a pattern for the frame.
A piece of scrap fabric, 45" x 45", for making the veil pattern.
11.5 feet of metal strip or wire, light enough to bend but strong enough to hold its shape. I used brass strip, 1cm wide by 1mm thick.
26"x 8" of stiff linen / light buckram / stiff vilene.
2 x (26"x 8") shirt-weight linen or cotton.
45"x 45" black velveteen, wool or heavy silk.
45"x 9" brocade or other decorative fabric.
2 x (4"x 9") striped silk - the stripes go across.
